At A Glance: Milan Fashion Week

Milan Fashion Week was all about new rules by the National Fashion Chamber, the Fendi Tsunami, and wardrobe malfunctions. Moreover, it was more and more about fashion spreading its wings and becoming the hub of a lifestyle.

This year, we saw Armani cash in on velvet for their next fall/winter collection. From Velvet trousers to soft and rounded silhouettes for coats, Armani was slightly more conservative this time around with hardly any of their designs showing any legs at alls. Let it be a velvet pantsuit or even their floral prints, the colors were mostly dark and they emphasized on women feeling classy this way!

Jeremy Scott sure knew how to bring the heat to the Milan Fashion week as theatre is his forte. Moschino gave a dramatic setting to their collection as they brought out strings of pearls and chains, taffeta gowns, tuxedo jackets and whole lot of melodrama. Smoke played a huge role in this runway.

As for Fendi, Karl Lagerfeld ruffled it up real good for everyone this time around. His Japan inspired collection saw puffy shoulders, billowing dresses, decorated leather boots and ruffled necklines. In addition, their trademark items like its fur coat saw a new twist in fashion as well as it had black and white stripes along the bottom

A lot of nostalgia was a part of this Fashion Week as well apart as Salvatore Ferragamo played with colors and classy twists. The geometric and rigorous designing speaks loudly of the inspiration from artists from the Bauhaus and Dada design movements. From big buttons on bodices to zigzag ribbons and vertical zippers, it was all a constant playfulness of colors.

Dolce & Gabbana put a completely different and very likeable twist to fashion; the Prince and the Princess both are women. We saw a different version of Cinderella’s dress, loaded with more simplicity compared to the book. To show their own women as the Prince as well, the world saw the D&G bolero jackets loaded with military details with half striped pants. We officially welcome the new generation of fairytales as told by D&G; ‘individuals first and foremost.’

Versace showed us women dominating the catwalk as their collection ranges from power suits to trimmed rib knits. Even the men’s jackets are more feminized with plunging backs and a hemline covered in sequins. The pants are either cropped or finished in stirrups. The collection had very Baroque elements with psychedelic prints and ranging from dark colors to pastels.

The Milan Fashion Show was the final set of ramp walks for buyers and fashion enthusiasts in the series of Fall/Winter 2016-2017. The cards have be laid and it seems as Milan is planning to be more of ‘in the moment’ this year with their decision to release these clothes during the season and not before hand. Well played, fashion industry!
